Beekeeper Writes Book About Honeybees: Buzzzzzzzz What Honeybees Do

I’ve been asked more than once what makes me an authority on honeybees or the subject thereof? I have also been asked what makes me think I can write a book about honeybees? What are my qualifications? Well, I will start with telling you I am not an entomologist. But for those of you who don’t know the answer, I will brief you… before and while writing Buzzzzzzzz What Honeybees Do, we had many beehives in an apiary in Ohio where I lived on a 25-acre farm. Later in life, and when we lived in Maine for about four years, we had as few as one to two hives. I have been a natural beekeeper and photographer of the little buzzers for years– and am currently, an advocate, of our greatest pollinator and encourage beekeeping. Yes, Buzzzzzzzz What Honeybees Do, a nonfiction, was written by a beekeeper, me. The cover photo of Buzzzzzzz was also taken by an amateur photographer, beekeeper, and writer, me. I’m not proposing to be an authority or know everything about honeybees– but having been a beekeeper and photographer of honeybees for several years certainly gives me a qualifying factor for writing a book about honeybees, so that is what I did.

With that mystery behind us… you will see in the photo below and left, a swarm of honeybees that are about to get a new home. It was such an exciting day and always rewarding to get a swarm of honeybees in the wild. Behind
the veil and white jumpsuit, you will find (me) getting ready to help capture this swarm of honeybees. :-) I’d much prefer to be behind the camera taking photographs of honeybees, but this day, I was asked to help get the swarm into their new home (beehive).

Dennis Higgins and I (Virginia Wright) became Facebook author friends back in April of 2012. We became close after discovering that we both lost siblings too early in life, we adopted each other as virtual brother and sister. Often people think we actually are blood siblings.

In 2014, Dennis asked if I would be willing to do some illustrations for his book, Steampunk Alice. I ran with it and not only made illustrations for the interior but ended up illustrating the entire front cover. It won 1st place in the 2014 Author DB cover contest. Thanks, Brother! I appreciated the illustrating challenge. :-)

Pennies From Across The Veil By Dennis Higgins is a uniquely written love story. It is being told by the main character, who is telling the story in what seems to be a dark place (you will have to read the story to understand this). The characters are well created, and at times they have me smiling, at other times, they give me goosebumps. Throughout the whole story, I found my eyes welling up over several touching moments. Pennies From Across The Veil has it all– I can see this story being turned into an on-screen movie and out in theaters. I definitely recommend this read. I thoroughly enjoyed Pennies From Across the Veil. Intriguing, a bit mysterious, and definitely heartfelt, the characters felt “real.” The innovative way the story is told (from where I cannot reveal, because that is much of the mystery here!) is very unique and kept me reading. I read the whole book while traveling – waiting in line to board the plane(s), in flight, and waiting for my baggage at the end of a long day. Most especially I loved the touches of physical manifestation of a spirit’s love. The pennies…so cool! You have to read this book to know what I’m talking about – but don’t think you can guess the ending, it’s a very cool twist. On the recipe section of my blog, The Recipe Weekly, recipes are posted that I have developed, recipes from friends, family, followers and fans, as well as from various genre authors. It is true… authors cook! Speaking of authors cooking…

I caught up with Author Dennis Higgins the other day and I asked him what sort of goodies he fixes at Christmas. Before I talk about a recipe he shared, I want to tell you about his newest book release, Pennies Across The Veil. Pennies From Across the Veil is a love story… about death. Karl Himmel tells the story to an unknown presence, of how he met, fell in love, and married the woman of his dreams, Jenny Engels. But at the time of the telling, Karl and Jenny find themselves on different sides of the veil—the separation we call death.

But not even death can stop true love.

Powerful signs come to those from loved ones who have passed. They can be found any and everywhere, we just need to look for them. The most significant for Karl and Jenny was the finding of numerous wheat-back pennies. However, could there have been many others, and did these signs have a deeper meaning?

Sounds like a great book, can’t wait to read my copy!

Dennis gave me an easy but delicious recipe that I could share: Chocolate Dipped Peanut Butter Pretzel Bites. Please also read the history behind the pretzel that he shared with me.

Chocolate Dipped-Peanut Butter Pretzel Bites

Did you know the pretzel has a Christian beginning? In the olden days in Germany, the season of Lent was stricter than it is today and the faithful had to give up all forms of oils, eggs and a host of other things. The pretzel was invented to make a treat that didn’t use any of these ingredients. The way they folded it in the traditional pretzel form was supposed to represent arms folded in prayer.

Ingredients:

Pretzel chips or Wheat Thins

Chunky peanut butter

Chocolate bark, melted

Directions:

Take two pretzel chips or Wheat Thins, spread chunky peanut butter between them–dip in melted chocolate. Dennis says you can fancy it up with sprinkles too. Voila! These pretzels are a delicious treat everyone will love!

Dennis noted that if Wheat Thins are used, they must be the reduced fat version. They are crispier.
