World Read Aloud Day February 24, 2016

Virginia Brown_Virginia Dutch2In honor of World Read Aloud Day, I thought I would share a photo of my grandmother reading The Night Before Christmas to me.  From a young girl, I wanted to be a writer.  But, I never imagined back then, one day that I would grow up and write my own Christmas book. Goosies!

Reading is extremely important, not only for pleasure but for developing skills needed in everyday life. When reading aloud, you can put so much expression in the voice as the story unfolds. Children love being read to and when they can read, they love reading to others.

In 1998, while I was teaching at St. John’s Preschool and Kindergarten in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, I  implemented a reading program in my class that I penned, Book-A-Day.  This would help promote children’s reading literacy in my classroom and to get young children interested in reading every day.  I found that young children had much more interest in story time when it was made part of a daily schedule.  Instead of my students just bringing in a book on Show & Tell Day, every day of the school week, children took turns bringing in a book. It was an easy plan to establish… because I simply asked the child who had the turn to bring in the snack of the day– to also bring in a book.  I found that the interest was two-fold in story time, and while teaching for three years at St. John’s,  I kept  the Book-A-Day program in place, in my classroom. Book-A-Day is a reading literacy awareness effort that I hope to make every preschool and kindergarten class aware of.
Now go read!

Ten Zany Birds

Description: Ten zany birds have a party in a tree, singing and dancing. Five have stripes, three have spots, and one has purple polka dots. They’re all having fun, but one by one, they become distracted.

One is frightened by a loud plane. One gets hungry. One wants to race and another needs a bath. Only one stays to sing in the tree, but who will it be?

Ten Zany Birds is a fun, beautifully illustrated picture book. As parents and teachers read, children are introduced to counting and basic subtraction skills. Whenever a bird leaves, the number of striped, spotted, and polka-dotted birds changes, teaching the application of simple classification rules.

Whimsical and entertaining, Sherry Ellis’s tale of ten silly, distractible little birds is an excellent choice for both prereader storybook time and early readers.

Let’s get on with our interview:

Ten Zany Birds Cover What inspired you to write, Ten Zany BirdsMy daughter received a birthday party invitation a few years ago. On the front of the card was a picture of some crazy little birds. They ignited my imagination. I had been contemplating writing a counting book, and I thought little birds would be perfect for it.

How is Ten Zany Birds different from other counting books?  When I wrote Ten Zany Birds, I wanted to create a book that not only taught kids about numbers and counting, but also about colors, classifying, and basic subtraction.  Ten Zany Birds does that. Each of the birds is a different color. Some have stripes. Some have spots. One has purple polka dots. As each bird becomes distracted and leaves, the number of spotted and striped birds in each group changes. It teaches children to pay attention to these details. The simple rhyming text is also good for early readers.

The water color illustrations are so colorful and whimsical. Can you tell us about the illustrator? Charu Jain is the illustrator. She is a very talented lady who lives in India. I met her through a children’s writer and illustrator social media site called, JacketFlap. I looked at samples of her work and noticed that not only were they excellent, but she also seemed to really enjoy drawing birds. That was important for a book with lots of birds! She had also mentioned that it was her dream to illustrate a children’s book. I contacted her, and the rest is history. I think children will really enjoy the colorful world she created. They’ll like the little spider and snail characters she included on each page, too.

Do you have any other projects you are working on? Yes. My agent has another picture book manuscript I wrote called, Don’t Feed the Elephant! He’s looking for a publisher. He also has the manuscripts for my children’s chapter book series. The first book is called, Bubba & Squirt and The Big Dig to China.  I’m currently revising some of the manuscripts in that series. The premise of the series is that two kids, Bubba and Squirt, travel through a hole that goes through the Earth and takes them to different countries. There they have adventures, while learning about the language, history, and culture of the country. I have other ideas for picture books, and even a novel. They should keep me writing for a long time!

The Cover I Illustrated “Steampunk Alice” by Dennis Higgins Brought Home the Gold

Gold Winner_Book Cover Finalist 2014 Authorsdb

Steampunk Alice, written by Dennis Higgins,  and illustrated by me (Virginia Wright), won the Gold in the Authorsdb 2014 Cover Contest. I’m so excited, I just  had to blog about it!!!!

When I first began illustrating, it was only for my own books: Buzzzzzzzz What Honeybees Do, Crying Bear, The Princess and the Castle, The Prince and the Dragon, The Christmas Secret, and my latest release: Wild Animal Sounds

Then, I met Dennis Higgins, and eventually he told me about a book he was writing (Steampunk Alice), and asked me if I would consider doing some art for it. I hesitated, but asked him to give me a brief description of what he envisioned his character, Steampunk Alice, would look like. I set my WIP aside, and began working on Alice. He liked it, and from that point on, I worked for a number of months on the cover, that Dennis also liked, and chose to use. And, I also did a a few of the book illustrations.

The cover was entered in the 2014 Authorsdb Cover Contest, and brought home the Gold. For someone who had never gone to an art school, and didn’t start illustrating until late in life,  and never illustrated for anyone other than herself (until now), I can tell you that I am more than elated!!!

Steampunk Alice is a GREAT ‘Time-Travel’ book.  I am extremely proud that the cover brought home the Gold for the author, Dennis Higgins. Thanks go out to: the voters,  and Authorsdb.

A special goes out to Dennis Higgins.  Thanks for believing in me, brother, as an author, artist, and for submitting the cover into the contest. Yippee! We brought home the (Gold).

I am currently working on my next writing and illustrating project, an adorable children’s Christmas book that is slated for release Fall 2015, titled: Timothy the Christmas Mouse.

Lastly, I am also going to work on something that is not my usual genre…. Stay tuned. :-)

Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and blessed new year!
Hugs,
-Virginia Wright
