December 16, 2012 Welcome! Thanks for joining me for my release party! Grab your coffee or tea and sit a spell. Before I get to how you enter for your chance of winning my giveaways today, I wanted to include a few questions and answers from an interview that Author Sherry Ellis did with me over on her blog Mama Diaries. Please read through it and then I will tell you how I’d like to have you comment for your entry in my giveaway. I’d also like to invite you all to subscribe to my blog via email, you will get updates when I’ve published a new update. The subscribe box is in the right side bar.

About Me:
Born and raised in Belfast, ME, children’s author Virginia Wright began her writing career at an early age in a diary with lock and key given as a gift by her mother. After graduation from high school in 1976, she took coursework in journalism and writing. Later, as a mother and homemaker, her writings were published in local publications and newspapers, as well as online. A military family, the Wrights have lived in countries all over the world and in seven different states. Her five grandchildren and being a preschool teacher in Mississippi gave her inspiration to write children’s book.

I asked Virginia some questions about her writing career. Here’s what she had to say:
1. Tell us a little bit about your background and how you became a children’s book author.

Ever since I was a young girl― I put words to paper. I can remember sitting on the veranda of my parent’s house writing, first it was a little diary with a lock and key, later, as I started growing up it was a pen and pad in hand—back then, I wrote mostly Poetry and Haiku’s. My excitement for writing was realized in 1981, when I sold my first writing to a regional publication Washington County Magazine, but the excitement for writing didn’t stop there, it continued to grow!

That is so cool that you started writing when you were a kid, and that you’re still doing it and love it!

2. What do you like most about writing for children?
While I consider myself a mixed genre writer, children’s writing has definitely taken front and center the last couple of years. What I like most about children’s writing is the reactions from children when they listen to my stories and turn the pages of my books. If I see their smiling faces, it was all worthwhile to me.
Aren’t kids the best? I love that, too!

3. Do you have any other works in progress? Can you share a little about them?

I’m looking forward to the release of my next children’s book, The Christmas Secret, in late fall 2012. It feels like it is working into a Christmas classic to me—it is about two little boys, Mikey and Charlie, who learn the real meaning of giving through one boy’s selfless act.

The Christmas Secret was released November 17, 2012

I’m not sure where my writing will take me after that, I have given some thought to writing a Young-Adult (YA) fiction; perhaps, a cookbook, or maybe a romance novel is in the works too. Stay tuned…

I can’t wait to see your new book. Good luck with your other writing endeavors!

The reasoning behind this event was a way to give back to viewers of my blog with a giveaway, and also to introduce readers to many different genres of writing. My interviews won’t stop at this event, the second week in January, I will pick back up interviewing authors and having book giveaways but not as frequently as in this event. However, the first authors I will be introducing you to in 2013 are Author Joe McCarthy, author/illustrator Tracy Campbell, and author/illustrator Jodi Desautels.

The Grand Prize Winner will win this:

A copy of The Christmas Secret  by Virginia Wright (me), a $25 gift certificate to Amazon.com to buy whatever you wish, and two Merck Family’s Old World Christmas Ornaments. The reason I have chosen these two Christmas ornaments will remain clear after you read the story. :-) It is a $75 value swag pack that I’m giving away. I will send it out Priority mail so that you will receive it by Christmas.

Old World Christmas Ornaments are my favorite type ornaments, they are simply beautiful. They glisten in the boughs of he Christmas tree among the lights.  Cindy, an old friend of mine, many years ago gave me an Old World Christmas ornament (actually she gave me a few different OWC) and I have been very fond of this particular style ornament ever since, and just bought myself three different ornaments this year. It reminds me of the type of ornaments we would have put on my tree as a little girl.

Each glass ornament produced for The Merck Family’s Old World Christmas is hand crafted in age-old tradition using the same techniques that originated in the 1800′s.

  1. Oh Virginia..you have brought to mind so many wonderful memories of Christmas’ past! One of my favorite was when I was about 5 or 6 and waking up on Christmas morning and feeling the excitement that “Santa really came!!!!” A doll and doll carridge! WOW! So much under the tree and Mom and Dad in awe as much as I was because Santa came to OUR house!! I remember feeling what I know now as, the “Magic of Christmas”!!!!

  2. Christmas memories are the ones that never leave you! Every Christmas was wonderful…I can remember every one! Picking one memory is not easy but putting the same memory into one is easy! I remember the thrill of going to see Santa at our local town tree on Christmas Eve with all the lights and Santa coming on the fire engine with the siren bringing him closer! Always so excited with the mail bringing packages from away with unique tags and wrap! I remember all the Christmas fragrances such as the smell of wet mittens when we would come back from cutting the tree in the woods! Memories are made of feelings too! Christmas was a day of exitement knowing to hang onto this day all year wasn’t possible but THIS day was brilliant! Thank you Virginia for remembering with me! Merry Christmas!

  3. Awww! Wonderful memories, Karen…I could also smell your wet mittens after the cutting of the tree. I remember many years going out after our Christmas tree, with my dad. Such an exciting moment looking for just the right tree. Merry Christmas! I hope your Christmas is full of magic. Also, thank you for stopping by and your support! All the best, -Virginia, Karen

  4. I have thought all day as to what I should put down as my favorite memory of Christmas. Honestly, I am not sure I have one. I don’t want to put down the obvious of waking up to see if Santa came and seeing the presents around the tree. I don’t remember going caroling or anything like that. The one thought I do have, is of a time when my brother and I were discussing at a young age as to whether Santa was real or not. I can only remember bits of the conversation. But it was interesting to have this conversation…. and in a strange sort of way seems like one of the closest conversations I have ever had with my brother. It may be strange…. but looking back, I remember the closeness… and that is what I enjoy most about Christmas…. or any time!

  5. Jodi, Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. The conversation you had with your brother is all about closeness–so wonderful you did remember that feeling. Yes, I agree, Christmas is about closeness, sharing and spending time with family, and/or friends. Thank you for sharing! And Merry Christmas to you, and your family. I wish you all the best for the new year. -Virginia

  6. Hi Virginia,
I wanted to comment earlier, but this is the first chance I’ve had.
I wish I had thought of putting a lock and key on my diary, then my mom wouldn’t have found out about some of my… I’ll just leave it at that. LOL

A favorite memory at Christmas is when I received a red parka with a white, fake fur hood, and then I ran outside and walked for hours in the snow.

You don’t have to enter my name in the draw as I’ve already won your book, which I can’t wait to read! Oh yes, don’t forget to send me the questions for the interview.

I could download the “Christmas Secret”, but I don’t want to spoil my surprise.
I can’t believe how generous you are…offering free downloads of your other books. I’m looking forward to reading them.

    Thank you, Virginia!

All the best of success with your writing career! :-D

    Tracy

  7. I’m the eldest of seven and now 60 years old :) As a little girl waiting for Santa, Christmas felt magical! I remember coming down the stairs filled with excitement to see the one unwrapped gift that Santa left for me! It was a beautiful doll with red hair and big green eyes! I’d never seen such a large doll! She was at least two feet tall and my most favorite gift ever! <3

  8. Hi Tracy, Thank you for stopping by. I hope you enjoy The Christmas Secret. Let me know please when it arrives–hopefully you will get more than just an envelope this time! Ha, a diary back then had a lock and key. Oh, you are welcome for the books–it is my pleasure. I will send you the interview questions soon. :-) Thank you for the best wishes, and the support! -Virginia

  9. I know this is too late for the contest but I like the Christmas memories, they are fun.
My favorite memory is of my younger brother and I lying on the floor looking at our distorted faces in the Christmas bulbs, while it’s snowing outside. It’s just one of many.

  10. Thanks everyone for stopping by…I loved reading all your Christmas memories! My best goes out to you all for a wonderful Christmas and a Happy, Healthy, Blessed, New Year!

    -Virginia
